With her fun, gossip girl approach to celebrity news, Lainey Lui has long been our go-to for as-it-happens updates on the stars. From her hugely popular celebrity gossip blog LaineyGossip.com to her telegenic reports for CTV’s ETALK (airing week nights at 7 PM ET on CTV), the brilliant and hilarious (not to mention gorgeous!) Lui knows what it takes to get red carpet-ready. Here the Vancouver-based insider shares her best beauty advice.
What’s a regular day like for you?
I wake up between 4am and 5am every morning to start blogging. Around 7am, I conference call with ETALK in Toronto about my segment for the show that day. Then I start writing my ETALK script. I start getting ready for the studio around 8:30am, leave at 9am for the studio, and I’m on camera by 9:30am at the CTV Vancouver for my ETALK hit. Then I go back home and blog for the rest of the day, ending at about 5pm. Through the day, I’ll talk to sources, make arrangements for interviews, sort out travel requirements for junket assignments. When work is wrapped, I’ll take my dogs out for a hike between 5K and 8K. Dinner is usually at 8pm. Then I’ll go back to email for an hour or so. After that, bed.
Best part about the job?
I love blogging. My job is to provide content for people who love celebrity gossip, engaged all day in conversation about movie star drama. It doesn’t suck.
Why the obsession with style?
I am vain.
Person who has most influenced your approach to style?
My ma. She’s a tacky Chinese lady – everything has to be tricked out and, preferably, gold. So my goal really is just not to look like that.
What’s your beauty routine?
I LOVE Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant. It’s so gentle and it makes my skin feel so clean and smooth and it gets rid of gross blackhead bumps. I’m addicted to Tata Harper’s night serum. Really feel like it’s putting moisture back in my face.
No facials, but I’ve been seeing Lorinda Zimmerman in Vancouver, who is a skin magician, once every 8 weeks or so for microdermabrasion and cold gel laser and it’s changed my life. I break out less on my chin. My pores are shrinking. I haven’t been this happy with my skin in a long time. And the best part is that it’s non-invasive. You don’t look jacked in the face like Nicole Kidman. You look like you but super fresh.
I also get a manicure every week, obsessively. And a pedicure every two weeks.
What about hair?
I buy whatever shampoo is on sale for $3.99 at Shoppers Drug Mart. And I don’t use conditioner.
My hair is thick, stick straight, and flat. Sometimes I get tired of it being limp. Then when I put it up in a ponytail, there’s always an awkward kink around the crown that looks terrible. Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray is really good for adding some body and texture to hair like mine. On the rare day that I decide to do something with my hair, that’s my go-to product. I scrunch my hair while blowdrying, and the Surf Spray adds fullness. It does take a while though and most of the time I’m too lazy or rushed.
I have hair neurosis so I don’t have it cut very often. Maybe, maybe once every 8 or 9 months. When I do, it has to be Victor at Rain in Vancouver. He understands I’m a crazy person about length and doesn’t force me to cut more than I want/need. At the same time, he pushes back when I’m obviously being a child. It’s just hair! It will grow back!
Best beauty advice?
Everyone needs a signature bright lip colour. I’m not saying you have to wear it every day. But when you do, it should be your first choice, and memorable. Sometimes it takes years to find though – that exact shade of red, plum, fuchsia whatever. So when you do find it, you need to go Costco styles on that and buy as many as you can. My favourite is Vincent Longo’s Priscilla. I think I might be up to 12 tubes of it by now. It’s my bright lip colour for life.
Also, easy on the foundation. People wear too much of it. It makes them look old.
Best hair styling trick?
I always get excited about a braid. Almost any braid. When in doubt, try to work a braid into your hair.
Beauty pet peeve?
Why are French manicures still happening?
