Best Brightening Treatments for Hyperpigmentation

If you suffer from sun damage or hyperpigmentation, fret no longer (it causes wrinkles!). These five creams will help brighten your complexion and remove dark spots.

If you spent your summer baking under the sun but now you have unwanted brown spots on your skin, philosophy’s Miracle Worker Dark Spot Corrector is the perfect remedy. Miracle Worker has brightening technology that improves skin discolouration that can be caused by aging, acne scarring and sun damage. The brighteners work at different levels of the skin without the help of hydroquinone–meaning it’s safe for those with sensitive skin and different skin tones. It also contains retinoids, which is an anti-aging ingredient. Expect improved skin tone and discolouration, and a brighter complexion. It also addresses fine lines. $81at Sephora and Shoppers Drug Mart.

Nip + Fab Pigmentation Fix is perfect if you’re noticing brown spots that are caused by a hormonal imbalance. Pigmentation Fix combines Illumiscin, which targets age spots, Vitamin C to improve skin tone, and olive leaf tree extract to brighten skin. It penetrates deep into the skin’s outer layers to give you a youthful complexion. Apply Pigmentation Fix at night to cleansed skin but make sure to apply a moisturizer after because brightening creams often dry out skin. $15.85 at Nip + Fab.

Brighteners can really dry out skin and can be quite uncomfortable to use, but Clinique Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector is dermatologist-developed and is safe and comfortable to use. A lot of brighteners aren’t created for darker skin tones but Even Better is safe for those with darker complexions. It’s not only perfect to use on your face, but can also be applied to chest and backs of hands. $63 at Clinique counters.

Laboratoire Dr. Renaud’s Radiance White Brightening Essence – Dark Blemishes may just be the strongest brightener in the bunch. It’s formulated with Laser C Complex to reduce the appearance of brown spots and leaves your skin looking healthy and younger. It’s safe for all skin types, even those with sensitive skin. Unlike the other serums, which can be used all over the face, Radiance White is used locally on the affected areas only. Use it morning and night on cleansed skin and dab it in gently with fingertips. Let it dry completely before applying moisturizer or makeup. Bonus: The metal container comes with a white pouch to protect it from sun and breakage. $77.95 at

Yes To Grapefruit Dark Spot Correcting Serum can be worn under your daily moisturizer to help reduce the appearance of uneven skin tone. Formulated with mulberry fruit, white tea, and grapefruit, which revitalizes and lightens skin damaged by the sun, acne scars or hormones. Celebrity Beauty Buy: Jennifer Lawrence’s Secret To Smooth Skin

Jennifer Lawrence is on fire this season! From the release of the new Hunger Games Catching Fire to her spontaneous yet fab new pixie hair cut, this red carpet star we love can do no wrong. Including sharing her favourite skincare secrets, such as organic bath salts for smooth, youthful skin.

Lawrence’s fitness trainer Dalton Wong revealed in an interview for Grazia Daily that “he gave [Jennifer] some Epsom salts to bathe in which really helps to get rid of any bloating in the body before slipping into a red carpet dress; it’s a great trick that anyone can use if they’re working up to wearing a particularly clingy dress.”

Epsom salt is a rock mineral mined from natural sources. It is well known for softening the skin and relaxing sore muscles. Organic bath salts also help improve circulation and detoxify skin. They help to open up the pores and cleanse the hard to reach dirt and oil buildup you may have.

And the list of beauty benefits goes on: They’re also great for soothing skin irritations such as rashes, making skin soft and supple, removing calluses, moisturizing skin, and can also act as an exfoliation for the skin, getting rid of dead skin cells and encouraging the growth of fresh new skin.

Though you can get scentless, the salts with a scent offer added relaxation and aroma therapy. A great organic bath salt is Mountain Rose Herbs organic bath Epsom salt.  Mountain Rose Herbs bath salts are of high therapeutic quality, and simple to incorporate into weekly or even daily baths or soaks. Just add two cups of Epsom salt to warm bathwater. Tip: While soaking, try massaging some of the salts over your skin. This will help to exfoliate and cleanse the skin.

The Best BB Creams and CC Creams For Your Skin

Cold weather means skin becomes dry and flakey. Get your perfect complexion back with our favourite BB creams and CC creams.

If you’re still prone to breakouts then you should be using a BB cream. BB creams are lighter than CC creams so your skin can breathe better and they won’t clog up your pores. Stila Stay All Day 10-in-1 HD Beauty Balm is a silky cream that reduces the appearance of pores and controls breakouts. It contains micro spheres that hide imperfections and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Tripeptide-37 , bamboo and pea extracts diminish the appearance of fine lines, while emollients increase antioxidant activity. Don’t let the fact that it only comes in one shade concern you–it blends seamlessly into most skin tones. Also available in a bronzer and illuminator. $49 at Shoppers Drug Mart.

Last week my friend showed up to a dinner with absolutely glowing skin. I remarked on it immediately and she told me she it was all thanks to Garnier BB Cream Miracle Skin Protector. Garnier’s BB cream contains caffeine, which stimulates circulation and decongests pores to give you a radiant glow. Glycerin smoothes skin texture and allows skin to retain moisture. Mineral pigments absorb instantly into skin to provide flawless coverage, while vitamin C offers antioxidant properties that brighten and even out skin tone. Garnier’s BB cream is a one stop beauty balm shop. $19.99 at mass retailers.

Since BB creams were first created for an Asian market, manufacturers didn’t feel a need to offer the makeup in many shades–especially for darker complexions. BB creams have taken off in North America and Europe, but the situation hasn’t improved much. Luckily Maybelline is one of the few makeup brands that offer a range of shades with their Dream Fresh 8-in-1 Beauty Balm Skin Protector. Containing SPF 30 and 0% oils, this BB cream is also perfect if you’re prone to an oily t-zone. It brightens, evens skin tone, hydrates, smoothes complexion, and blurs imperfections. Dream Fresh is the best bang for your buck. $10.99 at mass retailers.

Clinique Moisture Surge CC Cream Hydrating Colour Corrector Broad Spectrum SPF 30 is one of the only CC creams that comes in a wider range of shades–five to be exact. Clinique CC cream offers up a lightweight formula with moderate coverage that blends seamlessly with concealers. It reduces redness, and combats dullness and sallowness. The oil-free formula hydrates skin and SPF 30 guards against harmful UV rays. Skin reflecting particles make skin look more even toned. It’s perfect for those with a medium complexion. $35 at Clinique counters.

Chanel’s Complete Correction Cream is perfect for those who like really rich creams and moisturizers. Chanel’s CC cream melds skincare and makeup into one tube. SPF 30 and PA+++ sun filters block UVA and UVB rays, which speed up the aging process. Cornflower water soothes skin, while Hyaluronic acid keeps skin hydrated by retaining moisture in the skin. Rejuvencia shields the skin from external environmental factors. Chanel’s CC cream offers the thickest coverage and the longest wear. The texture is velvety and non-oily. The only downsides are that it’s only for Caucasian skin and it has a very strong fragrance. $58 at Chanel counters.

Celebrity Beauty Buy: The Olsen Twins

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, what ever happened to them? Well they’re back and looking absolutley gorgeous in the pages of Allure Magazine. Known for their statement-making fashion and beauty dos, this time the twins rock a covetable natural look. (But as we all know, natural is harder to pull off than it sounds!)

Makeup artist Fulvia Farolfi revealed her secret to creating this stunning natural look. Farolfi says “the look was mainly about the brows.”

To create their bold, beautiful brows, Farolfi filled them in with  Dior Powder Eyebrow Pencil in Sable Sand ($29; available online or at Sephora). This product is great because it creates a natural yet bold fill to the brows. It also defines and deepens the brows in a subtle way without any harsh edges, leaving you with a subtle, natural look. Also, it’s long lasting, so you won’t be going throughout your day worrying if you need a touch-up.

Follow Farolfi’s steps to complete the look:

Step One: Fill brows in with Dior Powder Eyebrow Pencil; using a brush, lightly fill in the  natural curve of your brow

Step Two:  Use an eyeliner pencil on lids and just under the lower lash line–no mascara needed. Try: Dior Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil in Intense Brown.

Step Three:  Use a powdered brown blush to add a slight bit of colour under the cheek line. Top the look with a subtle lip balm. Try: Dior The Vibrant Colour Powder Blush in Mimi Bronze and Dior Addict Lip Glow Color Awakening Lipbalm.

Editor Obsessions: Kiehl’s Blue Herbal Skincare Spot Treatment

Like everyone, my skin dries out during fall/winter–nothing a little moisturizer can’t fix. Blemishes? Not so easy. No amount of primer, concealer or foundation is able to hide my acne. So for the past two weeks, I decided to dedicate myself to using Kiehl’s Blue Herbal skincare line and I’ve fallen in love with the Spot Treatment!

This oil-free formula uses a combination of cinnamon bark extract and Glycolic Acid to target problem areas while soothing irritated skin. The cinnamon extract contains anti-bacterial properties to help treat blemishes while preventing new ones. Needless to say, this quickly became the rock star of my skincare collection.

After 48 hours, I already noticed my acne spots subsiding, and one week later my skin is finally beginning to heal. Into the second week, my blemishes were barely noticeable, so I temporarily ditched my BB Cream to rock the au naturel look. My morning beauty routine has now been narrowed down to Kiehl’s Blue Herbal Moisturizer and and the Spot Treatment. I’m currently nearing the end of my second week, and my skin has never looked better. My skin feels smoother, and unlike other acne gels I’ve used in the past, it doesn’t feel dry. I guess I’m done with faking perfect skin, because my skin is one step closer to looking flawless.

Runway to Real Way: Matte Skin

Summer’s dewy complexion is long gone, but you don’t even need to fake it this fall because this season it’s all about a matte look. Designers from Lanvin to Valentino, Jil Sander and Versace all picked this finish for their fall/winter runways. We love the matte finish because it is totally touchable and modern and it won’t become shiny or oily as your day goes on.

Backstage at Lanvin, makeup artist Pat McGrath created a matte finish look by simply tapping on concealer where needed and lightly contouring cheeks. The look was finished with powder, for the perfect matte look.

At Valentino, flawless skin took the spotlight. To achieve this flawless finish, foundation and concealer were applied where necessary. Unlike the traditional matte look, at Valentino, faces were finished with a touch of blush and lots of highlighter strategically placed in spots where the light naturally bounces off skin to create an ethereal glow.

Creating a matte look is fairly simple. Follow these 3 easy steps to get this polished matte look from the Versace runway:

Step 1: Prep your skin with an oil=free lotion like Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Lotion.

Step 2: Apply your powder with a brush instead of a sponge; this will allow for a more polished look as opposed to the caked on look. Try bareMinerals  Full Flawless Face Brush.

Step 3: Touch up with blotting papers throughout the day as needed. Try Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets.
